This anthology contains the best of the best contemporary Chinese short-short stories written up till 2004, including 10 ancient stories. They will surprise, thrill, and shock the reader.

It is the first of an anthology trilogy which comprises 101 stories written in Chinese by 74 authors from China, almost all of whom are literary award-winning writers. The stories were collected through two open submission calls and translated by the retired Canadian professor Harry J. Huang, PhD, who is a world-renowned Chinese-English translator, a fiction writer and translation studies scholar.

The Chinese short-short story, which has become the most important genre of fiction in China, ranges from 500 to 1500 Chinese characters, or approximately 350 to 1250 words when translated into English. It is still unknown to many readers in the English-speaking countries. This anthology introduces much of its merit including its unique features that may shock the English reader.

The anthology is divided by theme into three parts. Part 1, “Love Relationships,” consists of three sections: “Sweet Romances,” “Love Storms,” and “Unrequited Love.” Part 2, “Twists and Turns,” comprises four sections: “Loving Parents,” “Caring Children,” “Social Ills,” and “Hopeful Humans.” Part 3, “Old Classics,” includes ten ancient stories.

This book is designed as a book of literature for the average English reader, and it is also intended as a textbook from which students and scholars outside of China can learn about China: its politics, culture, language, as well as its citizens’ life, and above all, a rich variety of human relationships.
